Project Overview:
Comprehensive rehabilitation of the elevated subway structure along the Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line from 225th to 242nd Streets, spanning from Bent 147 near Harlem River Bridge to Bent 282 near Van Cortlandt Street Station. The project covers a three-track system and includes rehabilitation of auxiliary facilities such as circuit breaker houses, crew rooms, and signal towers.
Scope of Work: The construction work encompasses structural steel repairs, abatement, and painting, including priority repairs of track girders, columns, gusset plates, and miscellaneous components. Surface preparation follows SSPC standards with varying methods: SSPC-SP10 (Blasting) or SP15 for below track level, and SP2/SP3 with HEPA vacuum attachments for above track work. The project includes hazardous material containment using SSPC Guide 6 systems, painting of structural steel and facility enclosures, installation of bird deterrent systems, and demolition of two abandoned structures.
Technical Specifications: Surface preparation methods vary by location: below track level utilizes SSPC-SP10 (Blasting) or SSPC-SP15 (Commercial Power-Tool Cleaning), while above track level employs SSPC-SP2 (Hand Tools) and SSPC-SP3 (Power Tool Cleaning with HEPA vacuum). Paint removal and containment follow SSPC Guide 6 systems, with proper management and disposal of hazardous lead paint.
Project Challenges: The project faces several key challenges including limited clearance between elevated structures and roadways, complex MPTs requirements, and weather-dependent operations. Work is restricted to daytime hours only, requiring careful coordination with the active subway line operations. Lead paint abatement and containment in an urban environment adds another layer of complexity.
