Tectonic is providing Resident Engineering services to the MTA Construction & Development’s Long Island Railroad Business Unit for the critical replacement of the aging fire water main suppression system at the LIRR Hillside Maintenance Complex (HMC) in Queens, New York. This facility serves as the primary maintenance hub for the Long Island Rail Road’s electric train fleet.
Under Design-Build Contract 6482, the MTA has engaged a specialized Design-Builder to undertake the complete overhaul of the HMC’s fire protection infrastructure, including piping, sprinklers, standpipes, and yard hydrants. The existing system relies on a single loop of failure-prone 10″ fiberglass underground piping, fed by an aging diesel fire pump – posing significant risks to facility operations and personnel safety.
Tectonic is overseeing the multiphase implementation of this critical infrastructure upgrade:
Phase 1 (183rd Street): Install and connect new piping to public water service and on-site fire pumps.
Phase 2 (177th Street): Install new underground water main, yard hydrant system, and connections to public water service.
Phase 3 (Interior Facility): Install new sprinkler supply pipe loop, sprinkler alarm valves, wall hydrant connections, and cross-connect isolation valves within the HMC.
Tectonic is ensuring the seamless execution of this comprehensive fire suppression system replacement, enhancing safety and resilience at this vital LIRR facility.
