Morgan Farms Equestrian Center is located on a satellite campus with a horse farm which is part of the United States Military Academy at West Point serving the Academy’s Equestrian team. The new 24,000 square foot arena and 12,000 square foot attached stables provides year-round riding conditions and housing for 20 horses. This facility also serves as a home to the West Point mules and includes a museum and viewing center for the equestrian team’s competitions which takes place in the arena.
The scope of work included the construction of the 36,000 square foot building and infrastructure. Substantial earthwork operations were necessary to provide a level area for the structure. The construction presented a unique challenge due to the remote location, environmental conditions and strict Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC). Upgrading the utilities to supply the new facility with essential power and water was a priority. Significant coordination with the local utility companies were required in order to meet all the local codes and requirements of the building. The UFC required the entire building have a fire suppression system which dictated a substantial amount of available water. Several large holding tanks along with a pump house were installed to provide the necessary water. An oversized stormwater retention system was also installed to prevent high volume runoff to the adjacent area. In addition, the adjacent area is home to several protected animals and plants requiring careful construction operations.
A significant challenge was the management of a gift funded fire suppression system that was installed by a specialty contract under a separate contract. Tectonic coordinated the separate fire suppression contract with the General Contractor making sure the project stayed on schedule.
Tectonic’s services included construction management oversite, project management, schedule and cost management, and project coordination. The Tectonic team served as the primary liaison between the Owner, Contractor, Academic Services, DPW, Orange & Rockland Power, Architect and Engineer throughout the construction. The project was constructed under a design build agreement.
