Egner Music Hall Renovation Project

Glee Club rooms (the only cadet club involved), and an electrical system overhaul.

Steeped in history and musical legacy, Egner Hall at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY, is poised for a transformative renovation. Built in 1932, this iconic structure originally housed rehearsal rooms, barracks, and a Mess Hall for the renowned West Point Band. Its name honors Philip Egner, the visionary Teacher of Music who served from 1909 to 1934, leaving an indelible mark on the academy’s musical heritage. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Marcia H. Randall, widow of Robert D. Randall, Class of 1956, Peter Krause, Class of 1967, Robert Carpenter, Class of 1967, and Allan Salisbury, Class of 1958, this historic building has undergone a comprehensive renovation, ushering in a new era of state-of-the-art facilities and enhanced capabilities.

The Egner Hall Renovation Project is elevating the Cadet Glee Club’s rehearsal space to a cutting-edge, permanent home base. A digital acoustic system will significantly improve practice conditions, expediting learning, enhancing team skills, and reinforcing individual technique. The installation of recording capabilities will not only increase public outreach through more frequent recordings but also capture the organic, acoustic performances of the talented cadets. Furthermore, an audio-visual installation will seamlessly connect the Glee Club room with the West Point Band’s audio tech studio, enabling dynamic interactions with guest artists, presenters, commissioned composers, and facilitating virtual viewing of performances by other esteemed groups.

Centralized HVAC will ensure consistent temperature and relative humidity, safeguarding the preservation of equipment, library, and archives, while providing optimal working conditions for cadets and staff. The facility improvements will extend their benefits to other performing cadet support clubs, such as the Glee Club. Temperature-controlled storage for expensive instruments, climate-controlled rehearsal spaces, and more functional use of existing space through design improvements will enhance the overall experience for these talented ensembles.

This comprehensive project encompasses approximately 25,000 square feet of renovation within Egner Hall (Building 805). The scope of work is extensive, encompassing abatement, demolition, sitework, concrete, gypsum underlayment, masonry, steel, finish carpentry, acoustical insulation, membrane roofing, wood door restoration, doors/frames/hardware, aluminum windows and storefronts, metal framing and drywall, acoustical ceilings, resilient flooring, ceramic tiling, painting, specialties, loading dock equipment, stage equipment, curtains and drapes, sound control door assemblies, elevators, fire protection, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work.

This extraordinary renovation will propel Egner Hall beyond its storied past, transforming it into a beacon of musical excellence that nurtures the talents of West Point’s cadets and safeguards the academy’s rich musical tradition for generations to come.
