Tectonic was subcontracted by Dattner Architects to provide survey, civil engineering and geotechnical engineering services to the Army Corps of Engineers in the design-build of the Thayer Hall Swing Space at West Point.
The Government requires 14,400 square feet of gross floor area for general instruction over a 25-year service life. The building is centrally located between Doubleday Field, Jefferson Hall, and the Plain. The completed structure will be first used as a swing space during the interior renovation of the adjacent Thayer Hall. Upon completion of that project, the building will be repurposed as swing space during additional construction projects in the Central Area of the campus.
Survey services included topographic mapping of the development site, location of features in the general environs, and acquisition of utility data from surface evidence and markout. Footprint encompassed about 2 acres.
Site civil engineering responsibilities included: review of existing stormwater
drainage capacity; stormwater detention; potable and wastewater services;
construction plans (e.g., site plan, grading and drainage plan, erosion control plan, utility plan, etc.); supplemental technical specifications, as necessary; construction administration support (document review, preparation, site visits, and coordination); and meeting attendance.
Site geotechnical engineering duties included: detailed review of the Government’s geotechnical report of record; full-time field inspection services (test pit program, visual inspection of subsurface conditions); preparation of geotechnical engineering summary, incorporating previous report results along with new data; and provision of asphalt pavement section designs.
