Tectonic Wins 2020 ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Awards for Three Projects

Tectonic Engineering Consultants, Geologists & Land Surveyors, D.P.C., a leading multi-discipline engineering firm headquartered in New York’s Hudson Valley, won three 2020 ‘Engineering Excellence’ awards by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York. The eminent ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Awards program has honored its member firms for over 50 years for work demonstrating the highest degree of skill and ingenuity on projects worldwide.

The ACEC New York Chapter granted awards in twelve categories including transportation, water resources, environmental engineering, structural systems and building/technology systems.

In the category of Structural Systems, Tectonic won the Platinum Award for its special inspection services for the new Vessel at Hudson Yards in NYC. Vessel is a structure and new landmark which exists as the centerpiece of Hudson Yards, a vast 16-building complex on the West Side of Manhattan. Funded by Related Companies and designed by Thomas Heatherwick of Heatherwick Studio, Vessel is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious and complex pieces of steelwork ever made. Tectonic inspected the installations of its framework composed of 87 interlocking carbon steel pieces, as well as the pre-fabrication of each piece at the plant in Monfalcone, Italy. Its 150-foot tall honeycomb-like structure exist as an interactive sculpture.  Each pre-fabricated piece created a network of 154 flights of stairs, 2,500 steps and 80 landings that visitors can climb to the top.  The Vessel also offers ADA-compliant ramps and a funicular elevator as alternate options to the top.

Tectonic won the Gold Award in the category of Transportation for its special inspection services for the Citywide Ferry Landings, NYC under its contract with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). The new NYC Ferry is designed to serve more than half a million residents in 21 neighborhoods and is projected to carry 4.6 million trips per year.

Also in the category of Transportation, Tectonic won the Silver Award for providing resident engineering and inspection services for West 33rd Street Crossing Hudson Yards, Manhattan under its contract with the New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC). The project’s goal was to raise the grade of the 33rd Street segment and install new infrastructure and street hardware as part of the Hudson Yards Development project, in order to accommodate the new towers being built between 10th and 11th Avenue on 33rd Street.

President and CEO of Tectonic, Donald Benvie, credits the firm’s recognition by the industry to the outstanding professionalism of the company’s employees who dedicate and apply themselves true to the firm’s motto “practical solutions, exceptional service”.
