WTC Transportation Hub and Vehicular Security Center

Tectonic Engineering & Surveying P.C. is providing Special Inspection services for the construction of the state-of-the-art World Trade Center Transportation Hub. The extraordinary new transit center was designed by the celebrated architect Santiago Calatrava and is approximately 800,000 square feet. The Hub includes climate-controlled concourses, mezzanines and platforms featuring high performance lighting. The Vierendeel Truss which weighs over 270 tons creates the spine of the mezzanine roof. The main transit hall is 365 feet long (which is longer than the main concourse of the Grand Central Terminal). Over 12,500 tons of specially designed structural steel was used to construct its centerpiece, the Oculus, with rib-like structures extending toward the sky. The Oculus contains multi-level art, retail and dining amenities. The concourses which spring from the Oculus link the entire center above and below grade.

The new transit center will serve an estimated 250,000 daily commuters and visitors.  It connects eleven subway lines and provides commuter access to the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) system, the Battery Park City Ferry Terminal, the World Trade Center Towers and Memorial, the World Financial Center and the Winter Garden.

Under a Task Order agreement, Tectonic provides special inspections in conformance with its approved Quality Control/Assurance program to ensure work complies with contract plans and applicable standards.

Tectonic is also performing the Special Inspections for the construction of the nearby Vehicular Security Center and Tour Bus Parking Facility (VSC). The VSC descends five stories underground to a basement with ramps connecting the parking and below-grade facilities of the World Trade Center site. It is a high-tech security screening checkpoint for all vehicles accessing the World Trade Center site. The facility is constructed with over ten thousand tons of structural steel.
