Graduate Princeton Hotel Vibration Monitoring

Originally constructed in 1918 and used as dormitories for Princeton University and later retail spaces, the site at 20 Nassau Street was purchased by Graduate Hotels to develop a new hotel focusing on sustainability and maintaining the building’s historic integrity. With these goals in mind, Tectonic was retained to provide Geotechnical and Survey monitoring services using state-of-the-art fully automated monitoring equipment to perform preconstruction condition surveys, vibration, noise, crack, and optical survey monitoring, as well as data reporting.

Photographic and videographic documentation was provided with a high-resolution digital camera with an overall plan generated onsite, showing the locations of existing distress features. Recommendations for any preventative measures and further monitoring were provided to the client throughout the monitoring process. Preparation of reports for observed conditions were also provided, as appropriate.

The installation of five (5) seismographs and five (5) noise meters, equipped with wireless data transfer modules, were placed at locations identified on the monitoring plan. All construction phase vibration recorded in exceedance of the project threshold limit generated automatic notifications to the Project Team via email. The vibration data was accessible via a central webhosting site.

An Automated Total Station (AMTS) was installed on a nearby building to monitor the adjacent structures and SOE during construction. High precision prisms were placed on the structures and SOE and measured on a daily basis by the AMTS. Deviations in X, Y & Z coordinates were made available on a dedicated website hosted by Tectonic.

Tectonic prepared weekly data reports summarizing the previous weeks monitoring data and included Instrumentation location plan, tabular vibration, and graphical monitoring data; and any comments or concerns.

CAMP Monitoring Services were also provided by Tectonic at two (2) locations. Documentation and analysis for air quality and other meteorological data was compiled and reported to the client.
