Riverside Center, NYC: Buildings 1, 3, 4 and 5

Tectonic currently serves as the Special Inspection Agency for the construction of a 31.5 million square foot, mixed-use mega development on 8-acres of land in the southwestern side of Manhattan’s Upper West Side known as Riverside Center. The five building center will include: 2,500 residential condominium and residential units; 140,000 square feet of neighborhood retail and cinema; a 100,000 square foot K-5 school to support 750 students; a 250-room hotel; 3.2 acres of publicly accessible open space, and 1,500 below-grade parking spaces.

Tectonic is providing special inspections for four of the five new residential skyscrapers.

  • Building 1 at 400 W. 61st Street
  • Building 3 at 10 Riverside Boulevard
  • Building 4 at West 59th Street
  • Building 5 at 1 West End Avenue

Inspections include but are not limited to Concrete, Structural Steel, Masonry, Firestop, Fire-Resistance Rated Construction, Emergency Power Systems, Smoke Control Systems, Site Storm Drainage Disposal & Detention System, Standpipe and Sprinkler Systems, Heating Systems, Public Assembly Emergency Lighting, Mechanical Systems and Energy Code Compliance.

Tectonic initially provided special inspection services for the excavation and foundation work for Building 5. The project required shop and field inspections for concrete and pre-case concrete; standpipe systems; and geotechnical services including pile driving and rock anchor inspections. Services provided in compliance with Safety codes and regulations. Building 5 is the first tower under construction bordering West End Avenue, rising 41 stories and will consist of approximately 365 residential units. Additionally, Tectonic provided inspection services for the new NYCDOT access road at Riverside Boulevard from West 59th Street to West 61st Street.

WTC Transportation Hub and Vehicular Security Center

Tectonic Engineering & Surveying P.C. is providing Special Inspection services for the construction of the state-of-the-art World Trade Center Transportation Hub. The extraordinary new transit center was designed by the celebrated architect Santiago Calatrava and is approximately 800,000 square feet. The Hub includes climate-controlled concourses, mezzanines and platforms featuring high performance lighting. The Vierendeel Truss which weighs over 270 tons creates the spine of the mezzanine roof. The main transit hall is 365 feet long (which is longer than the main concourse of the Grand Central Terminal). Over 12,500 tons of specially designed structural steel was used to construct its centerpiece, the Oculus, with rib-like structures extending toward the sky. The Oculus contains multi-level art, retail and dining amenities. The concourses which spring from the Oculus link the entire center above and below grade.

The new transit center will serve an estimated 250,000 daily commuters and visitors.  It connects eleven subway lines and provides commuter access to the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) system, the Battery Park City Ferry Terminal, the World Trade Center Towers and Memorial, the World Financial Center and the Winter Garden.

Under a Task Order agreement, Tectonic provides special inspections in conformance with its approved Quality Control/Assurance program to ensure work complies with contract plans and applicable standards.

Tectonic is also performing the Special Inspections for the construction of the nearby Vehicular Security Center and Tour Bus Parking Facility (VSC). The VSC descends five stories underground to a basement with ramps connecting the parking and below-grade facilities of the World Trade Center site. It is a high-tech security screening checkpoint for all vehicles accessing the World Trade Center site. The facility is constructed with over ten thousand tons of structural steel.

On-Call Specials Inspections & Materials Testing

Tectonic provided Special Inspection and Laboratory Testing services under contracts with the NYC DDC for services which include Cultural, Police and Fire Facilities, Libraries, Correctional, Courts, DEP, Juvenile Justice Facilities, Health and Human Services and Transportation Services.

Tectonic provided for quality assurance and furnished all tests, inspection reports and documents for filing with the Building Department.  Inspection and testing of all material, equipment and operations were conducted with strict adherence to the New York City Building Code and complied with contract drawings and specifications.

Hudson Yards Development

Tectonic has been awarded and is currently providing special inspections, construction phase geotechnical engineering and surveying services for the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project on the West Side of Manhattan.At full build-out, the mixed use development will include 16 high rise buildings containing more than 12,700,000 sf to accommodate residential, commercial and retail development. A platform will be constructed over the MTA Long Island Railroad (LIRR) West Side Storage Yard to accommodate the 16 buildings and infrastructure.

The plaza will encompass 14 acres of new public open space and parks which is half of the entire Hudson Yards site.  It will have easy access to the High Line and will host events at the Culture Shed and Public Square.  The Hudson Yards site is expected to receive over 24 million visitors each year.

Projects include:

  • Tower A at 30 Hudson Yards and Retail Podium is a 90-story, 2,600,000 gsf commercial office tower and 7-story retail podium which will house shops and restaurants on multiple floors.
  • Tower C – 10 Hudson Yards and Terra Firma is a 52-story, 1,800,000 gsf commercial office building consisting of office space, retail, parking and loading areas, building services, and future non-retail space.
  • Tower D Foundation – 15 Hudson Yards is a 70-story, 960,000 gsf residential tower anchoring the southwest corner of the Eastern Rail Yard.
  • Tower E – 35 Hudson Yards is a 70-story, mixed-used tower which will contain a hotel, residential, retail and office space.

Special Inspections & Materials Testing Term Agreement

Tectonic has been contracted on a 5-year term agreement to perform special inspections and materials testing for the New York Power Authority in support of their Economic Development and Energy Efficiency programs. The services provided under this contract support the Governor’s energy goals of reducing source consumptions by 20% in state owned facilities by 2020, via the implementation and construction of capital, operations and maintenance projects. Examples of such projects include the upgrade and replacement of existing facilities (ex: lighting upgrades, chiller replacement), redistribution of heat and power generation, water treatment, and installation of solar photovoltaic/thermal panels.

The types of facilities that NYPA typically services include, but are not limited to: colleges; correctional facilities; health care facilities; multifamily residential areas; offices; transportation; wastewater treatment plants; large area and outdoor services.

Manhattanville Development

Tectonic provided special inspections and materials testing services for foundations of two new major construction projects at Columbia University’s Manhattanville Development, including the 450,000 SF Mind Brain Behavior and the 70,940 SF Central Energy Plan facilities. The projects utilized a top-down method of construction and include the construction of slurry walls, load bearing elements (LBEs) and floor slabs.

Tectonic provided technical and administrative services as the Professional Engineer for special and progress inspections, materials testing and documentation of work in accordance with the NYCDOB. Inspections include:

Special Inspections at WTC Site Projects

Tectonic has provided special inspection and geotechnical inspection services at various projects at the WTC site.

The World Trade Center – Tower 4 was designed by the Pritzker-Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki as a 72-floor superstructure, rising 977 feet with 2.5 million rentable square feet of space. The tower offers 140,000 sf of retail on five floors, a 46 foot lobby, and art installations by Kozo Nishino and Thinc. It is an elegant achievement of technology, efficiency and sustainability. Tower 4 is located at 150 Greenwich Street and bounded by Greenwich, Liberty, Church and Cortlandt Streets.

World Trade Center – Tower 4 was designed in accordance with the highest energy efficiency standards to meet the LEED Gold level of sustainable design by the U.S. Green Building Council. It shares the site’s 16-acres with Towers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 in addition to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, and the Transportation Hub.

Four World Trade Center features many structural enhancements, including a reinforced concrete core and columns with steel girders and beams. Safety systems were designed to exceed New York City Building Code and to meet agency requirements. The firm was responsible for providing QA/QC and Special Inspection services for all aspects of the construction.

The firm performed quality control monitoring and oversight of the construction project to ensure it met and exceeded the requirements of the building codes and the intent of the design plan and specifications. The firm assigned experienced professionals familiar with the types of materials used and the construction process to ensure the methods used by the contractors were proven to provide results.

NYC SCA On-Call Inspections & Testing

Tectonic is providing management, inspection and testing services to ensure compliance with construction plans, specifications and building code requirements for various schools across the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.

Scope of work includes concrete, structural steel, asphalt, soils, masonry, curtain wall and mechanical inspections.  Certain assignments involve supervising the demolition of existing school buildings and construction of new buildings replete with classrooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, cafeterias, administration offices, cellars, etc.

Some major projects include:

Mott Haven Campus – This $149M campus is comprised of four schools on 8.7 acres, formerly the railyard property in the Bronx. The 275,000-square-foot multi-story facility was built to serve more than 2,200 high school and middle school students. The primary entrances are street level from Concourse Village West, which is 30 feet above the former railyard property, supported by a retaining wall. Playing fields and other open space at the railyard elevation cover the eastern portion of the campus.

BSSWA at Casita Maria – This new $49M 90,000 square foot, state-of-the-art educational and cultural facility will house both Casita Maria and the Bronx Studio School for Writers and Artists (BSSWA).

Intermediate School /High School 362 – This $60M educational complex accommodates two high schools, an intermediate school and a special education facility.  All uniquely located on a single site but designed to be independent of each other.  The two high schools and an intermediate school each accommodate 600 students, while the special education component accommodates 120 students.

DASNY On-Call Term Agreement

Tectonic was awarded a multi-year Term Agreement to provide construction inspection and geotechnical services for various State Facilities. Since 1996, Tectonic has been providing inspection for soils, concrete, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel materials; preparing inspection reports and performing on-site investigations.

Several assignments also called for technical inspection and administration of pile driving, caisson and earth anchor inspection, in-situ testing of footing subgrades; inspection of steel, fabrication, and erection as per design specifications; and pre-construction services involving surveying and assessing the existing condition of the adjoining buildings.

Projects ranged from the construction of new buildings or additions to rehabilitation of State facilities.

One of the major projects assigned included the $380 million Bronx Criminal Court House.

Westchester’s Ridge Hill Shopping Center

Developed by Forest City Ratner Companies (FCRC), Ridge Hill in Yonkers, NY, is a dynamic and diverse mixed-use project, featuring some 1.3 million square feet of retail space, including shopping, restaurants and entertainment. It also includes about 160,000 square feet of office and research facilities, as well as a hotel and conference center. Ridge Hill’s residential component is comprised of 1,000 apartments, of which 200 are for active adults ages 55+ and 135 affordable units.
