Tectonic Wins 2021 ACEC New York Gold Award for Upper Candor Dam Rehabilitation Project

Tectonic Engineering Consultants, Geologists & Land Surveyors, D.P.C. (Tectonic), a leading multi-discipline engineering firm headquartered in New York’s Hudson Valley, is excited to receive a Gold Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York as part of the 2021 Engineering Excellence Awards program.

Each year, over 60 firms submit projects that are judged on a rigorous set of criteria, which includes complexity, innovation and value to society. The ACEC New York Chapter grants awards in eleven categories.

Tectonic will be honored with a Gold Award in the Water Resources category at the 54th Annual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala, to be held on June 5th, 2021, for services performed for the Upper Candor Dam Rehabilitation project.

Along the Catatonk Creek with a 122 square-mile watershed, the historic Upper Candor Dam was damaged during extreme flooding associated with Tropical Storm Lee in 2011. Faced with the challenge of rehabilitating a dam without adversely impacting the existing unknown and unpredictable structure, Tectonic and the Town of Candor successfully secured federal disaster funding to design, permit and construct an upstream stabilizing structure to control the seepage. The principal goal of preserving the dam structure and the upstream environment was achieved. With the FEMA-funded rehabilitation now complete, the upstream impoundment is used for recreation purposes and is considered an important asset to the town.

The eminent ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Awards program has honored its member firms for over 50 years for work demonstrating the highest degree of skill and ingenuity. These awards help publicize the many significant contributions consulting engineers make to the built environment throughout the world.
